  1. Great idea.

I’m a web developer and designer. I used to work only with WordPress due to how great it is, but has since moved to using a CMS we have developed ourself (can find it here: http://github.com/jamesfleeting/CMS)

I was a freelancer for over 2 years but now work for a local advertising agency doing client sites. The agency does print work, tv/radio work, billboards, web, etc.

I’ve been on a Mac for 2 years now. My home office has a 24″ iMac and I carry my 15″ MacBook Pro to and from work.

I think the articles you’ve been posting. Reviews of software/books you find/read. Tips and tricks you find or pick up. Insights into your coding practices, etc. I’ve always found Case Studies to be great articles. Some insights into the work you do for a client, how you settled on certain stuff, etc.

Gotta love self promotion: @twofivethreetwo and paperkilledrock.com

    • Do you just do tax accounting on the side? Or just development for fun? That’s an interesting combination :D

      • I’m not freelancing web dev right now. I’m not experienced or skilled enough to get paid yet, lol. I primarily work on tax accounting (I know where my bread and butter is, haha).

I’d like to think that I’m good at tax. I work for an accounting firm in nyc, freelance, and teach tax right now.

But, I’m really interested in web dev and media design. Tax is great, but I get sick of seeing legal docs and numbers.

I am a logo, web and graphic designer. I have been freelance for about a year and a half and love it.

    Mac or PC?
    Mac!

What kind of articles would you like to see on here?
Your current articles are great! One idea – Normally I job out all programming, but recently I have been learning Wordpress and html. I understand the basics like changing text size and adding html to widgets, but I would love if once a week you could pick a user question and explain/solve.

    Twitter: @bauerhaus

My website is http://www.bauerhaus.com (thanks again for your help with a few coding tweaks on the new WP site :)

And for all of you readers out there: http://www.goodreads.com/beccaritz

  11. I found your site just the other day and it looks useful – thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I used to be a safety-critical software engineer and I’m now working full-time in IT Operations, but I’ve always had a “softer” side with an interest in web technology and am thinking about moving into that area – possibly as a web communications freelancer or consultant doing training, advice, and some design and coding. I’m still exploring what the possibilities are.

I use PC’s but I can see the appeal of Apple’s stuff – especially after my recent iPod Touch purchase. I view computers as tools and don’t really get why the Mac/PC divide seems so important. I wonder if plumbers discuss spanner brands at length? (I have a silly feeling that they probably do…oh well!)

    Keep up the good work!

  12. # What do you do?
    Web development/design
    # Do you freelance, work at a regular job, or are you a student?
Student but do a bit of freelance.
    # Mac or PC?
PC – Windows + Linux. Holding off making the Mac switch at the minute but I don’t think I can hold it off that much longer :P
    # What kind of articles would you like to see on here?
Well I’m really looking forward to this photoshop one ;)

    • Wow Colin I wouldn’t have pegged you as a Mac user…glad to see a lot of people on here have made or are thinking of making the switch…which is good because 99% of the awesome software reviews I do are Mac based :)

      • Like @Magicroundabout I blame the ipod touch ;)

I’m still trying to justify the price of Mac though. In fact the UK store has raised it’s prices since I last visited. Not exactly the best way to convince me to buy one.

  13. Great idea! I’m a 19 year old web-designer/developer based in the Netherlands. I started making website since the age of 15 and I enjoyed it, so I did read some books and done a lot of work for friends an family. Last year i’ve finished my study on Marketing & Communicaties and I’m interested in art, music, design, marketing, hockey, social media and lots more!

    # Currently working for Tirato Interactive, the Netherlands.

    # I’m one of the few designers who like the PC better than a Mac. I’ve been doing some work on a mac, but i din’t like OSX and didn’t think it was user friendly enough (windows isn’t either, though – but it gives more freedom for me). The thing I hate the most is that OSX doesn’t display font previews in programms such as Illustrator or Photoshop.

Anyway, I love windows 7 – i’ve been working on it for a while. Used to working on windows xp, which was great also.

Upgrading a PC is easier for me, than upgrading a Mac and it’s less expensive when it comes to hardware upgrades.

#I loved your webshop (web)software review. Love those, make more of them of any type of (web)software.

    • I’ve been trying to install Windows 7 but for some reason it freezes every time during installation :/ Guess I’ll sell the new OS or something…told the BF that’s why he should by a Mac already…no problems with installation and mac OS’s are WAY cheaper….and the computers are cheaper in the long run because you can keep them longer (I still had a clamshell lappy running the newest OS until a couple of years ago)

      • It’s a common problem usually caused by usb devices staying active longer than they should. Try googling for some solutions or alternatively install with all of your fingers crossed ;)

He’s a gamer though. I don’t think you can convince a gamer to switch to the Mac lol.

  14. Hello Amber,
Really a good thought that you’d like to hear from us….i hardly think professionals like yourself having blogs out there think so much about their readers…thanks for the consideration and help.

I’m a web developer and work on classic asp and asp.net …full MS stuff….I’m a PG and certified professional and have worked for a company for a year..
i’ve left my job and have been focusing since the last
6 months on freelancing and helping out in our family business. I work for around 3-4 hours a day, mostly nights…its tough and i do skip days, but its like living hand to mouth…

Still God has been merciful and i’m making progress :) I’ve done a few scripts/pages in php/mysql too and i think its really good. I’d started out with wp but was unable to catch up becoz theres a lot out there and i’ve to either earn or learn.

I’d like to see some basic articles on WP customization basics….like how we could add links at various places etc. It’d also be great to see articles on variable naming conventions you follow in php while doing wp projects and some of the regular ways you handle sql and forms in web apps. (oh god i cant think of anything else but code.. lol )

Your articles relating to freelancing are a great read and i follow some of your great tweets on twitter. my twitter id is http://twitter.com/bharatkhiani and linked in : http://in.linkedin.com/in/bharatkhiani

    cheers,

  15. HI,

  16. What do you do?
I do front end user experience development for a startup company in Donwtown Portland, OR.

Do you freelance, work at a regular job, or are you a student?
I work full time doing what I love, as well as freelance on nights/weekends for friends.

    Mac or PC?
I loved my mac, a lot. But trying to move into .net/SQL Development and my Job forced me to go back PC :(

What kind of articles would you like to see on here?
I love tips/tricks and well thought out articles on just about anything. As well as topics completely random.

Feel free to leave your Twitter, portfolio or any other links you’d like to share.

  17. What do you do?
I’m a print, packaging and (most recently) web designer.

Do you freelance, work at a regular job, or are you a student?
I consider myself a lifelong student. However, since being job-eliminated from a full time job back in June ‘08, I’ve been freelancing, and plan to continue freelancing once I’ve secured new FT employment (hopefully real soon!).

    Mac or PC?
Everywhere I’ve worked, whether freelance or in-house, has been on a mac. However, at home, all my work is on a PC (I have an old G4, but don’t have the $$$ resources for new hardware and software– yet).

What kind of articles would you like to see on here?
I believe that content works best when it grows organically. But personally, and because it’s an area I’d like to learn more of, I wouldn’t mind seeing more web dev and CMS-related posts.

Feel free to leave your Twitter, portfolio or any other links you’d like to share.

You can find me on twitter @rcarmstrong.

    • Why don’t you stay freelancing? Do you not enjoy it?

      • Security? Benefits? Some people aren’t as self-motivated as others (Like myself) and find it hard to stay focused at home.

        • Yea my boyfriend tends to be the same way, says it’s too distracting at home. It’s the opposite for me and time goes by faster it seems at home :)

          • I think it depends on your “home office”. You just need to find the right spot at your home to keep focussed. Just take a room, make it your office and work over there. I can’t focus myself too when I’m working at the kitchen table. It makes me wanna cook some delicious food when I see the nice vegetables, garlics and spices. The best thing for me is to set up a space or room in the house with just a PC, a nice chair a desk and some books. I’m quitly fast distracted.

  18. About the distractions working at home everyone has his own way of working, in my case I had a very chaotic way of thinking and working, always wandering at home thinking in how to do my work, watching TV (for me is a good way to catch up with new trends) mostly european and asian channels. Sincerelly when I was an employee I had to be sitted working, fully stressed, now I work more “relaxed” and I fell more creative, for me the distraction cause me no trouble.

  19. * What do you do?
First of all, I’m probably the oldest person posting on this blog. I’ll leave it at that.
    * Do you freelance, work at a regular job, or are you a student?
My regular job is vice principal of a middle school up here in Massachusetts. I have a web design/ hosting business as a second job. If I could work full time as a web developer, I would but that doesn’t pay for my son’s college (told you I was older(er))
    * Mac or PC?
I’m on a PC now but I’m planning to move to MAC
    * What kind of articles would you like to see on here?
This site has been a big help in giving me ideas, tutorials, etc. Thanks for the help
    * Feel free to leave your Twitter, portfolio or any other links you’d like to share.

  20. What do you do?
I am an Engineering Lab Tech spending my time prototyping products and testing them. I do web design/coding as a side job in the evenings and weekends as much as I can. Planning to switch to the web field on a full-time basis once I learn more.

Do you freelance, work at a regular job, or are you a student?
My main job is a regular hours type job, while my web side jobs are freelance. Not sure which direction I will go if I move to the web for full-time employment, but would like to try freelancing.

    Mac or PC?
I am on a PC now that I built myself. Once something breaks that is too expensive to consider replacing or it outlives its usefulness I plan on switching to a Mac.

What kind of articles would you like to see on here?
I like the mix of articles that you post now. Wouldn’t change a thing.
