This is a great read to finish off my unproductive Tuesday. I too found that trying to manage everything through Excel / Numbers was far too time consuming, not matter your ninja level. I’ve been using Harvest for a while but am just this week getting into Billings 3, and so far this app is incredible. Great post, always interesting.

Great change of pace post. I hadn’t heard of Smarty Pig before and might give it a look. Very nice that one of the co-founders posted a comment here, I like that kind of personal interaction by a company. I still use my small local bank for most of my banking needs and enjoy some of the benefits from it, like local loan service and dealing with the same people each time I go in.

I had used Microsoft Money for my budgeting and money management, but with Microsoft no longer offering it I had looked at other options, like Mint and Quicken. Quicken has never impressed me and I am not sure how much yet I trust using something like Mint. I have decided just to build my own spreadsheets to use.

I would try Billings 3 but it looks like it is Mac only and I am still stuck in a PC environment yet. Maybe when I switch to Mac, until then I’ll stick to my spreadsheets and CutePDF to make them PDF files.

Thanks for including “the pig”! I love Mint (and SmartyPig of course) and agree USAA is amazing if you are able to use them. My wife and I have our auto loan and insurance with USAA. I’ve been really impressed with USAA’s focus on innovation (i.e. iPhone app for submitting checks). And their customer service is amazing…

Thanks again for including us on your list. We have some pretty exciting new features coming out in the next few months so please keep an eye out and send us your feedback.
