Insites: The Book
(I stole this image from their latest blog post, shush!!!)
When the lovely Keir Whitaker and Elliot Jay Stocks decided to team up to form Viewport Industries, I knew we were in for a treat. Lucky for me, Keir kindly sent me a pre-release copy of Insites: The Book, the first of their new products. Insites is a serious of interviews from some of the most famous designers and developers in our industry. But there’s no code, tutorials or design theory contained in the pages at all.
At just over 250 pages long, Insites is a pretty quick read. The interviews are cut up in a way that it makes it easy to read chunk to chunk. The pages are beautifully typeset, something we’ve come to expect from Elliot of course, and the writing is clear and engaging.
What I love about these interviews, is that they aim to start from the beginning, so we can see how our favourite heroes got started in the industry. I absolutely loved seeing the progression from tinkering to first job to where they are now. I normally get quite bored with industry books and tend to skip around, but I was actually captivated with each and every story, even with the people who I’d never heard about until now. I don’t even have a favourite – I love them all.
It’s no secret I’ve been in a funk this year, unhappy with both freelancing and web development, but after watching a couple of awesome talks this year at conferences, and after reading this book, I feel like I’m starting to be proud again of the industry I’m in. There’s so much to look forward to, and this book really shows that.
Insites is available for order tomorrow, September 18th from Viewport Industries. Even though I already have the PDF version, I’m definitely ordering the limited edition print version. You can see some of the photos from the physical book, as well as some more info in their latest blog post. Check out the awesome foiling in the cover. Drool please!!
