Having just jettisoned a client who expected me to design a site with no content and no hosting, it's been a very difficult couple of months. I designed the basic structure locally on my servers. Then kept getting excuses as to why they hadn't purchased hosting, sent promised content and copy or photos. They changed their site URL and busy model mid-design, and selling the business to another company. Then without even acquiring hosting decided that the site isn't what they wanted without even seen the finished product. Three months of step by step, "What I need from you is..." emails led to nothing but an email from the client that stated "My not getting you content and the things you requested should not hamper your ability to do the work." Huh? Oy!

Thanks for this, it’s a great article. Is not enough to know a few web languages.

In order to be a good web developer you need creativity and a lot of work. Maybe if you are working for individuals or start-ups but if you want to earn more money in the sector then review your clients and move up the stack. Proper companies do not expect to pay as little as $2500 for a site because proper companies (i.e. ones that are savvy enough to know about how to make a profit and grow) know they'll get rubbish for that. Proper companies also expect project plans, deliverables, deadlines, commitment and no excuses. If you can deliver that, you won't get out of bed for $2500 any more!

Nice blog. I agree too.
