Why I Love The Dev Community – Always

Posted on 01/12/11 in blog, development about , , ,

Yesterday I wrote an angry article about Why I Hate The Dev Community – Sometimes thanks to another article of mine being in the middle of a flame war.

I realized that it wasn’t fair to talk about all things I hated about our community without also expanding upon all the awesome high points of why I loved it as well. After all, we are a tight knit community and a lot of good comes of it.

The dev community has been my favorite group to be apart of. No where else have I ever made so many friends, found such great feedback or so many people willing to help out in a pinch.

One of the best parts about this community is how well we support each other. When one developer is being unfairly attacked, others are quick to step up and defend them. But we’re also not afraid of calling B.S. when we see it.

I became a developer because I loved working with code. I became a freelancer because I wanted to choose how I worked. I became a member of the dev community because I wanted to give back all I learned, while learning from others around me.

I believe the advent of social media sites like Twitter (and hopefully, someday Codesnipp.it) brought us closer together and made contact easier. When I meet Twitter followers in real life, we’re able to get together and talk like we’ve known each other since kindergarten. Now that’s cool.

With the exception of a few trolls and angry people, the development community is filled with happy, helpful people. We’re great at helping n00bs out, while still pushing them to learn how to help themselves. When tragedy strikes (like our own local Nashville flood), we’re quick to rally the troops and send supplies and money to help out, even if we’re half a world away.

No other community exists like ours, and it’s up to us to keep it as it is now – it’s awesome we have so many opinions and disagree, but try not to make it personal. Don’t be a troll and other trolls will soon fade away from lack of people to anger.

The reason I get up everyday and work extra late to write articles is because of your support and the community.

And that’s why YOU guys are so awesome!

  3. I love the dev community too, there’s so much help freely and willingly offered and for that reason i’m happy to let the (frequently anonymous) haters do what they do best.

Well said Amber… Things got a bit rough and for my part aplogies… You were right about how passionate, involved, and loyal most people in this community are and it shows that in the end were all a big bunch of geeks, even when arguing about which silly framework is the coolest.

Any how keep up the good work.
